The New “Cha”an Ka”an” Cozumel  Planetarium

Tripadvisor Reviews:

Very enjoyable planetarium – good rainy day activity”

This new planetarium is said to have the only 3-D digital planetarium projector in Latin America. It is, in any event, a very nice planetarium with comfortable reclining seating and a great projector and screen. They show things in English and in Spanish and have special presentations on a regular basis.

In addition to the planetarium proper, there’s an observatory, a number of outdoor horticultural exhibits, and a fun, modern “science museum” area focusing on Mayan astronomy and local flora and fauna. There are several classrooms in which things are taught to local school groups. Even the atrium area is impressive.

“A rare gem”

We wanted to do something different from the usual snorkel beach excursion. Walking up from the international port where our cruise ship docked – maybe 1/3 of a mile – is Cozumel’s planetarium and observatory. It is also a fascinating source of Mayan history. The facilities are high tech, better than anything I have seen recently in the states. We were guided by an incredibly knowledgeable young woman who serves as their media director. The planetarium shows are only at night during the week so we didn’t get to see those but the history portion was fascinating. It is only $4 US and worth twice that. The displays are interactive and in both English and Spanish. Great for families- children 10 or over will love it.
