Cozumel News August 5^th, 2014: International Volunteers Caring for Cozumel Turtles and How Much Money Do They Make Anyway? Part one of my report on the Cozumel Economy. Many of the items are not available in Cozumel and almost always, the items that are available are extremely expensive here due to the high cost of transporting goods to the island.

International volunteers caring for Cozumel turtles

The Cozumel Director of Ecology and Environment,  Eliot Reyes Novelo,  said that volunteers from Europe, Asia, United States and Latin America visit the island of Cozumel to assist in the care and  protection of the sea turtle .

The official said that the promotion of such activities is also helping to diversify tourism. He explained that the council had a relationship with the group “Vive Mexico”, which contacted 20 volunteers from Europe, Asia, USA and Latin America, who answered the call of the organization. He noted that he works closely with the Department of Tourism, headed by Juan González Castelán so that volunteers can also be guides to foreign tourists who come to the baby turtle releases.

Every three weeks new volunteers arrive; they expect to receive more than 200 volunteers who will do their part in the sand to protect the sea turtles. The program is expected to continue through December.

How Much Money Do They Make Anyway?

The Mexican people are some of the hardest working people in the world. There is no doubt in my mind that having seen the beauty of this land called Mexico first hand, the Mexican people that cross illegally into the United States, do so out of economic necessity. Having said that, I do not believe the average tourist and even some foreigners that actually live in Mexico realize exactly how important patronizing a business, the price they negotiate for a souvenir or the amount of the tip they leave is to the economic survival of individuals and businesses alike.

I am devoting this article to explaining the Mexican Minimum wage. I copied the information from Wageindicator.org. I included all of Mexico, realizing my readers live and travel all of Mexico.

-Cozumel falls into Geographic area “B” as it is in the State of Quintana Roo.

-The wages are for a full day of work, not hourly. They are in Mexican Pesos (divide by today’s exchange rate from your country).

-Cozumel relies 95% on tourism, there are no ranches, farms factories, or manufacturers, so the majority of the jobs on this list of “professional “employees do not even exist here.

-The Employers of General and Professional Workers are required to by Law pay for their share of Health Insurance, vacation, sick and Holiday Pay. The older the employee, the higher the premium, so adios older experienced employees, it is not economically feasible for them to keep them. Forget about being hired if you are “over the hill” as early as in your late thirties! Most places and Unions have a limit of 35 years of age on new employees. (Now you understand the seniors bagging groceries at the store working for tips, the children helping their parents peddle goods, and the need for so many to be self employed by selling anything they can make or sell on a commission basis only.

-This takes us to an army of people working “under the Table” for cash, for even less money for longer hours, or for tips only. They have no health coverage, vacation, sick or Holiday pay.

I will let my readers take in this information and tomorrow we will compare the daily income with the cost of food and gasoline.

The minimum wage rates in the table are in MXN (MX Peso)

The National Commission of Minimum Wages set the General Average MW for 2014  as  65.58 daily pesos.

Council of Representatives of Mexico’s National Minimum Wage Commission approved a general 3.9% increase in the minimum wage for geographic Zones “A” and “B.”  The wage increase was effective January 1, 2014.  According to the Federal Labor Law Article 83, the salary may be fixed per unit time, per unit of work, commission, and lump sum or otherwise. However, legal minimum wages in Mexico are declared on daily basis.  Article 61 defines the maximum duration of the day is: eight hours the day, seven if is at night and seven thirty when mixed. Also as per article 85 of the Labour Law, salary paid to a worker (not less than minimum wage) should be based on a normal work day of 8 hrs or 7.5 night hrs.
