Governor Roberto Borge Angulo and Mayor Fredy Martin Marrufo accompanied by his wife First Lady of the Municipality Mrs. Gina Ruiz de Marrufo, officially opened Carnival 2015 on February 12. In a ceremony, they crowned Ana Paula de la Torre and Gabriel Espinosa as Sovereign Maximum and Representatives of Carnival 2015. Also crowned were children, youth, and special royalty and emperors of Cozumel Carnival 2015.

On February 12 in honor of the Day of Love and Friendship Mrs. Gina Ruiz de Marrufo met with DIF volunteers and social service workers to thank them for their participation in the System for Integral Family Development (DIF) of Cozumel. In this simple gathering, she thanked the young people that go every day and collaborate with DIF, since it gives them the opportunity to learn about the social work done. She said that volunteering in an institution like the DIF will give them the tools and professionalism needed for the future so they may be hired at a company or start their own business.

inspectionCozumel Municipal Government Inspects City Buses

The Municipal Government conducted a surprise operational review to inspect the physical condition of City transportation on February 12th. City Head Ricardo Lizama Escalante said that in pursuance to charges made by Mayor Fredy Martin Marrufo, they worked in coordination with Civil Protection to ensure that both vans and buses are in the right conditions to provide good service. During the morning six fire extinguishers were found empty and seized, observations were raised on some vehicles that had no prices posted, or upholstery without labels, among others violations.  Detected anomalies are required to be corrected immediately, a corresponding Civil Protection report was issued and fines issued accordingly.

COZUMEL, 10 February 2015.-Mayor Fredy Martin Marrufo met with Secretario Ejecutivo del Sistema Nacional de Seguridad Pública ( Executive Secretary of the National System of Public Security), Jorge Carlos Hurtado Valdez , to propose public safety programs and projects to develop throughout 2015. The program includes different fields, among which are the social prevention of violence and crime.

The meeting took place in Mexico City and included Cozumel Officials in Public Safety and some Council members. The draft program for 2015 in this important area amounts to 12.5 million pesos and includes various items that benefit the population of Cozumel. It was mentioned that Cozumel lowered the crime rate by 23% in 2014 from the previous year.

renateActivist Renate Herberger Completes Cozumel Swim

Here is a follow up to our story about Renate Herberger.  It was reported on February 8th that she completed her goal of swimming around the entire island of Cozumel.  Activist Renate Herberger performed the feat of swimming around the island of Cozumel in eight days, a total of 109 kilometers to provide awareness. She talks to over 500 students worldwide.  Renate Herberger said the crossing was made to draw attention to the endangered species, awareness of the natural resources and encourage care for the sea and its species.
