Cozumel City Offices Closing
The municipal government announced that September 7th will be the deadline for processing building permits for the current administration. Some departments have already stopped doing business, and all City departments will cease to operate by the 8th. If you have any business that involves any of the City Departments, get it done immediately or be forced to wait until the new administration takes over on October 1st.
Cozumel Patriot Month Events
Roberto Marín Flores (Secretario General del Ayuntamiento), announced the civic-military events that will take place this month as part of Patriot Month.
Marín Flores reported that after the raising of the flag ceremony at beginning of the month, the commemoration of the CLXIX Anniversary of the Gesta Heroica Children will be held on September 13th at 9 a.m. at the Esplanade de la Bandera the Flag, heroes de Chapultepec.
On September 15th citizens will celebrate the CCVI anniversary of Independence, an event in which the Mayor, Fredy Martin Marrufo, will hail the heroes who gave us Mexico starting at 11:00 p.m. (Municipal Palace Park, unless announced otherwise)
“Prior to his speech, ” Feelings of the Nation ” written by José María Morelos y Pavón on September 14, 1813 in Chilpancingo Guerrero will be read.
The traditional civic-military parade will take place on September 16th with the participation of military forces, schools of different educational levels, and others starting at 9:00 a.m. along the Avenida Rafael E. Melgar (waterfront).
A Cozumel Tribute to Juan Gabriel
As part of the festivities of Patriot Month, the Municipal Government through the subdivision of Culture held the traditional event called “Canto por mi Patria” (A Song for my Country) which joined the national tribute to the recently deceased singer Alberto Aguilera Valadez, better known as Juan Gabriel, “E Divo of Juarez”.
Prior to the start of the event, Manuel Alcocer Angulo, Subdirector de Cultura issued a message of welcome on behalf of the Municipal President, Fredy Marrufo Martin, in which he reaffirmed his commitment to provide spaces for local talent and healthy family entertainment to the last day of his administration.
Similarly, he explained that on this occasion, Cozumel would join to the hundreds of tributes simultaneously taking place in his home town of Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, across the country and in major national television stations and international chains. to do the same, a week after the death of Juan Gabriel, one of the best singers and composers of Mexico.
The crowd that gathered on the esplanade of Quintana Roo Park, chanted songs performed by participants and coaches of the 2016 reality show “Sí Puedes Cantar, Puedes Llegar”, as well as special guests. The songs that were authored by Alberto Aguilera Valadez attained great success and interpreted by prominent national and international singers as well as Juan Gabriel.
Cozumel Ambassador of Independence Crowned
Congratulations to Rosario Guadalupe Lope Lorenzo crowned as Cozumel´s “Embajadora de la Independencia 2016” Cozumel, on September 3rd by Municipal President Fredy Marrufo Martín. The event kicked off the festivities for Patriot Month in Cozumel.
Second Fire Station Opens in Cozumel
Cozumel, August 31, 2016.- Municipal President (Mayor) Fredy Marrufo Martín, accompanied the Governor of Quintana Roo, Roberto Borge Angulo, at the inauguration of “Estación No. 2 del Heroico Cuerpo de Bomberos Ángel Pavilla y Bill Salmon”, making Cozumel one of the municipalities with the best infrastructure and tools to combat contingencies.

The vacation and a break must be what I needed to get back in the groove. I am busy reorganizing and updating The Cozumel Sun with a vengeance! I am in the store (Papelería Mama Lilly) by six in the morning daily and having putting a good four of the six hours into The Cozumel Sun. Our Cozumel Turtle Story
I have a small terrace in front of the house that until recently was home to a herd of turtles. Yes, at least 15! As in everything else in my life, a little guy showed up at the door one day after a rain storm. Word must have spread in the turtle community that I had purchased a baby bathtub, a pump and special turtle food, and more kept appearing. Soon four could not fit in the tub and I dug out a third of our large planter in our front terrace to make them a swimming pool, complete with running water and drainage.
More turtles came. They kept digging in the dirt and returning to the water. So I had to keep purchasing more soil for the garden section. I had to go from cleaning their pool and bathing them daily to twice per day. More turtles came and everyone kept growing and then turtle eggs appeared.
A little guy walked under the fence one day with one leg missing and we named him Tripod. He did not look like the others and did not sleep in the water at night. After realizing he was not just being unsociable, that he was in fact a different breed, we found him a home at Playa Azul. In the very front of the building they have a huge round enclosure with turtles. They are fed fruits and vegetables by the guests and staff. If you ever stop by and see a turtle with one leg missing, it is our Tripod!
The turtles crushed all the small plants and I decided to pull out my Plantain trees to accommodate them. I tried laying sod for them, it died. I tried sand, it washed away, just like the soil. One egg accidentally got cut with the machete when we were taking out the trees. The turtle was not developed yet, so we made a homemade incubator. We put the little guy in the granddaughter’s plastic Easter Egg. The turtle lived and grew quickly, we named her miracle. They all had names, Big Bertha, Houdini, our escape artist, Blondie, they each had a personality. The little turtle food containers were not enough, (not to mention expensive) we had to supplement feeding time with Papaya, lettuce, and cat food.
Upon my return to Cozumel after a six-month absence, they really looked huge. Not only that, I realize the space no longer enabled them to have a good quality of life. I contacted our wonderful Cozumel expert Rafael Chacón for assistance. Rafael personally came to pick them up and transport them to their new home. I cried, I miss them, but I know it is for the best. Our Turtles now live in the park on 65th, in their own paradise complete with a cenote. If you visit the Park and see turtles, say hello to big Bertha and the gang!
Now that the turtles have left the building, we are working on setting up the small terrace for the On-Going Garage Sale. It has been much too hot to sit outside in the sun. I am working on getting a tarp over the front terrace for shade and use the area for our on-going fundraiser. It is still a work in progress, I will advertise when we are ready to open. In the meantime, drop off your gently used clothing, household goods, etc. anytime of the day or night.
