Izamal, Mexico is called La Ciudad Amarillo (Yellow City) for the coloring of the traditional Yucatan buildings, is a lovely place to visit. It’s name comes from the supreme Mayan god, Itzamná, and it was a major worship center in ancient times.

About 40 miles east of Mérida, the pleasant town has cobblestone streets, two town squares, Mayan ruins and a couple of fine restaurants and hotels. There is a large convent, Convento de San Antonio de Padua, which was built on top of a Mayan pyramid by the Franciscans in the 1500s. Several Mayan ruins left from the precolonial period have been restored.

The town comes alive when the heat of the day subsides and dusk is the perfect time to begin your walk. Here is what we saw during our last visit.
