La Cucina Italiana

Selection of entrees at La Cucina Italiana

We reviewed this terrific Italian place in November 2010 and we return regularly. In business since 1986, it just keeps getting better. In addition to the great food, they have new stylish plates and a wine list (more about that later).

After passing through a small courtyard with caged birds (parakeets and finches?), you enter a warm, inviting space with tasteful art and an array of food on the counter. The specials of the day are arranged beautifully on platters. The choices might include a rolled eggplant, meatful and meatless lasagna, fish filet, grilled rib eye, stuffed chicken breast or frutti de mare (seafood pasta).

The prices range from 70 to 110 pesos for an entree and include soup, salad, garlic bread and an agua fresca. Today we reluctantly passed the flor de calabaza con carne de res (squash blossom flowers stuffed with beef) in favor of chicken roasted with honey, garlic and rosemary, and chicken breast rolled around cheese, garlic and spinach. Both came with a side of penne lightly tossed with a mushroom sauce. Both were excellent.

The minestrone has fresh vegetable flavors and the salad features fresh lettuce and carrot in a balsamic vinegarette. It will take a bigger appetite than mine to have room for dessert.

A glass of Spanish red is 30 pesos and is a decent 5-6 oz. pour. My philosophy of wine as food and that it should be served with every meal is often violated by some restaurants that have the nerve to price a glass the same as the retail bottle price. I hate being screwed without being kissed. I’m all for a fair mark-up, but some places take advantage of the concept. Not La Cucina Italiana. A bottle of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc that sells for 74 pesos at Mega or Chedraui is 94 pesos here.

Whether you are a visitor or resident of Cozumel, this place should be on your list for regular visits.
