Colonia Adolfo Lopez Mateos
Recommended by The Cozumel Sun

The Colonia Adolfo Lopez Mateo Community Kitchen was started by George and Alexandra on March 22. They could only serve beans and rice; all he could afford.

Location: 50 Avenida Norte Corner Calle 3 Sur across from the DIF Park

Their focus is on mainly serving families with older adults, people with different disabilities or families with many children. However, due to the huge unemployment problem facing the island it was necessary for them to add families where both parents are now unemployed.

We now organize shipments to serve up to approximately 150 families each day. If you average four per family that is approximately 600 meals per day.

Monday – Friday 2:00 pm – delivery starts right to the homes. Up to 4 delivery men distribute food within the city. A van has the specific commission to bring food to the farthest areas of the city. They have had the need to take turns for families in the colonies within the urban area of the island. However, the van heads to a secluded area with food every day. This is due to the great need of the families who live there.

Volunteers: Jorge´s wife Alejandra Sánchez, and friends Yesica Gutiérrez, & David Macias.
Community Kitchen Meals:

George and Alexandra started on March 22 feeding beans and rice; to all he could affords. However, that was short lived as the first of COVID-19 was reported on the island and social precautions became mandatory.

Families were asked to submit general information via Facebook or WhatsApp. They then made an official list of their group. They changed from running a kitchen to delivering the food to their homes.

The Community Stepped Up

In the Beginning it was difficult to gather enough food to feed to these families. With the grace of God, members of the community started sending what food they could afford. Others that could not, joined in to do the hard work of delivering and handling out the food.

Many people and companies have now stepped up and brought us rice, lentils, turkey, fish, chicken, pork, vegetables, and pasta.  We use financial support to purchase cooking gas, medicines, and other nonfood necessities, such as rent or utilities money.

COVID-19 Measures

Face masks, safe distancing, disinfecting mandates all followed as well as curfews.

They have Coordinated

Jorgeand his wife were first to organize a kitchen. They were pleased to see other families begin cooking for the community in other colonies on the island. Our goal is to have a community Kitchen in each of the colonies, we currently have eight. We are coordinating so that we do not duplicate recipients, we compare our lists and we are sharing resources

Community Kitchen Donations

A volunteer labor force with assistance from some members of the community and businesses for food, and cash. The kitchens have become a cooperative that now includes the Cozumel Sun, everything extra is shared with another location.

The couple of boxes from the Government that only some people received are not doing it! They are once again out of the food boxes and many on the island have yet to receive government help.
