Parque Nacional Arrecifes de Cozumel (National Marine Park) was created by a presidential decree on the 19th of July 1996 with the aim to preserve the vast submarine ecosystem and its great biodiversity. This park covers approximately 85% of the diving sites around Cozumel. Starting in Paraiso Reef, the National Marine Park follows the southwest coast and continues around the island’s cost until Punta Chiqueros. Some of the most famous reefs in Cozumel are Palancar, Colombia, Santa Rosa, Punta Sur, and Paso del Cedral. To dive among the reefs, you can stay in the shallows along the coastline or follow steep inclinations of enormous walls of coral as they descend into the shadowy depths. Cozumel also boasts beautiful diving sites outside of the Marine Park; however, it is important to ask your diving operator about where these are located.
