Two New Exhibits at Cozumel Island Museum

28 works including photographs, paintings and sculptures, by artists Verónica Ochoa Guarneros and Alejandro Fuentes Quezada will be on display separately until February for free at the Museum Of the island of Cozumel, under the titles of “México Abstracto” and “Interferencias”.

The Director of Centro Museográfico, Isela Carrillo Cupul, headed the opening ceremony and thanked both artists for their confidence in accepting the invitation to participate in the exhibit.  Alejandro Fuentes Quezada a native of Saltillo, Coahuila, is a sculptor. Artist Veronica Ochoa, is a Yucatecan presenting a multidisciplinary work of painting, sculpture and photography. Both were recognized for their participation.

After the official ceremony, a guided “Interferencias” tour was held. The sculptor explained that this exhibition, composed of eight works, “is a vision of the world and creation itself, from the perspective of order and chaos. The latter are the result of a mathematical code hidden in everything around us: the way water droplets take their spherical shape invariably, or the manner in which a bird’s feathers grow, for example. “

Verónica Ochoa Guarneros also invited attendees to tour her “ México Abstracto “, a collection of 20 works, among which there are painting, photography and sculpture. She said it “is a work that portrays a more than magical Mexico, full of color, Dreams, struggle and despair, one in which the artist has to take care not to fall into decorative images to sell. This exhibition mixes the figurative, with the expressive and abstract, some figurative sculptures and other heartbreaking. “

The exhibition “Interferencias” by Alejandro Fuentes Quezada will be in the Temporary Room until next February 21, and the exhibition of Verónica Ochoa Guarneros “ México Abstracto “, will be exhibited on the top floor of the museum until February 10 .

Extortion Calls – How to Handle Them

In recent years’ the number of robberies using extortion calls have risen. In a rare occurrence, there was a case in Cozumel that involved a tourist staying at a downtown hotel for a sporting event a few years ago. As a result of that incident, the hotels quickly did their homework provided staff training and changed procedures if necessary to better protect their guests.

In conversations with Mexican friends I discovered that many had experienced an extortion call or knew of someone that had. An extortion call is basically a ransom call for a kidnapping that has not really taken place. They tell you they have your family member, threaten you not to call the authorities or tell anyone, and have you pay money per their instructions.

It is common sense not to give out information to strangers on the telephone whether you are at home or abroad. Here is a clever chart that allows you to circumvent their efforts to rob you. It translates as follows:

POSIBLE QUESTION BY THE EXTORTIONIST:       YOUR ANSWER SHOULD BE:

Hello, who’s house have I reached?                        Whose house do you wish to speak to?

Who is Speaking?                                                    Whom do you wish to speak to?

Is this you Cousin?                                                           Who is calling? Give me your full name.

I am your Cousin “X”                                               Son of which of my Aunts? (full name)

You have won the Raffle!                                         I have not purchased any raffle tickets.

Dad It is your son; I have been abducted! (crying)  What are the full names of your grandparents?

We have you under surveillance.                                      What color is my Car?

We have been receiving threats from this number.           Well, call 911 / the authorities.

Come out of the house and give me your parent’s numbers. I am going to hang up and call 911.

The information was revealed by Josefina López Chulim, head of the Center for Information and Resource Educational Integration (CRIE.)  López Chulim explained that the main disabilities identified are intellectual, auditory, learning and communication, and that they only have three qualified professors on the island responsible for training teachers how to care for this sector of the student community.

Animal Therapy:
The Many Benefits of Animals in Palliative Care and Treatment

By Jenny Holt, Freelance Writer

The value of using animals to assist in healing and providing palliative care to sick patients has gained increasing importance in recent years. Pets can be acknowledged as part of a treatment program for sufferers of cancer and other ailments. Several studies reveal that animals help in recovery, improve mood, assist in the renewal of cells for healing, lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety and depression among patients. From dogs and cats to alpacas and birds, animals are being tapped to help improve a sufferer’s physical, mental, and social functioning.

Dogs

There is a good reason why dogs are often called a man’s best friend. They are faithful, affectionate and offer unconditional love.  The soothing effects of animal-assisted therapy are suggested in several studies. As an example, researchers at the Mount Sinai Beth Israel teaching hospital in New York found that the emotional wellbeing of cancer patients was improved after spending time with a dog therapist during chemo and radiation treatment. Dogs were distractions that took away their focus on the pain. Companionship also helped to combat feelings of isolation.

Horses

Next to dogs, horses are the most well-known animal therapists. Equestrian therapy is used on patients suffering from anxiety, dementia, attention deficit disorder (ADD), trauma and a wide range of other mental health issues. Apart from the physical benefits of riding horses, they help patients improve self-confidence, communication, and trust as well as assist in building social and decision-making skills.

Cats

Cats possess unbelievable healing powers and can also be used as therapy animals. They help combat loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Feline animals are valuable to elderly people who are suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia. Oscar, the famous therapy cat who lives in the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rhode Island has predicted at least 50 deaths. He stayed with patients who were terminally ill and provided comfort in their final hours.

Pigs

Pigs might seem like an odd choice as a therapy animal but they are highly intelligent, calm, affectionate, and sociable making them great companions for sick people and those requiring therapy. Reggie was a potbellied pig who worked as a therapy pet and companion animal for its owner and residents in nursing homes. Although she is no longer living, she made such an impact on helping people that LIFE magazine honored her therapy work in 1997 by acknowledging her as one of seven animal heroes that year.

Alpacas and Llamas

These are both domestic animals native to South America. Recently, llamas and alpacas have been accepted as therapy animals. They are gentle, docile and sociable. Alpacas and llamas are cuddly and like to be around people. In the US, there are currently 14 of them registered as animal therapists who visit rehab centers, hospitals and health facilities. Andrus, a non-profit organization in New York, uses alpacas to help traumatized children or those with behavioral issues.

Dolphins

Pet therapy is not only confined to animals living on land. Water creatures are also able to assist patients and sufferers of emotional or physical illnesses. In particular, dolphin therapy is another medium used in treating patients with learning problems, autism, Down’s syndrome or physical handicaps. However, this form of assistance is under scrutiny as it questions the safety risks and ethical considerations of using captive dolphins.

Animal therapy, has indeed, shown promising results in helping a patient cope with the effects of a disease or a medical condition. As with any other type of therapy, it is equally important to weigh the risks and concerns of using animals in different settings such as behavioral issues, ethical grounds and disease transmission.
