Cozumel Lifeguards in Cozumel Saved 161 !
The director general of Civil Protection, Erosa Rudy Navarrete said in a newsletter that to protect the swimmers who enjoy the island’s beaches, especially at peak periods.The administration implemented a program of prevention and rescue, called the Tourist Assistance Plan, that took place during holiday periods. He said that during these periods there is more activity in the main beaches and resorts. In addition to the lifeguards, firefighters trained volunteers, and provided information on sea conditions, hazards for the different currents, and precautions such as avoiding entering the sea after eating or during unfavorable conditions.
Cozumel lifeguards have saved 161 people from dangerous situations at sea this year, especially on the other side of the island. The rescues have been of swimmers in the main resorts on the island, mostly that of people who live in town. Of the 161 saves, 149 were in San Martin beach, four in Chen Rio and four in Casitas, two in El Mirador, one in Caletita and one in The Rocks. From these rescues, 71 cases treated were local visitors, 61 foreign tourists and 30 were domestic visitors.
Classes to Resume of Tuesday!
Members of the Teacher’s union representing Cozumel public schools met with Quinta Roo State Governor Roberto Borge Angulo on Saturday, and have agreed to end the strike. The Cozumel public school teachers and employees are to report to work tomorrow. Details of the agreement remain unclear to the employees involved in peaceful sit-ins and marches. Leaders are urging everyone to return to work tomorrow. Cozumel students have been without classes for two weeks.
Promising Cruise News for 2014
Cruise Terminal Cozumel Mexico SSA, will have a 30% increase in operations in 2014. The CEO of SSA in Mexico, Kassian Francisco Diaz, confirmed the significant rise in terminal operations in an inclusive interview with Por Esto.
He stated the increase in cruise ships will take place between April and November, which should ease some of the serious economic problems that affect a lot of business in this arid period.
During the off-season, SSA Mexico receives only one or two cruises a week; this increase would bring at least three operations. This will make a big difference in the low season, and make the high season even better.
According Kassian Diaz, European cruises use the Mediterranean Sea, linking the old continent with the Middle East, but the tense geopolitical situation does not help the tourism, so some cruise lines will return to the safety of the Caribbean.
When asked what advice he would give to Cozumel he said that the increase in cruise ship arrivals is not enough to revive the island if the destination does not make a renewed effort to view the business from a different perspective. He advised that the people and businesses here have to understand that it is necessary to work together and join forces to chart a common course, because predatory competition does not work.
Decompression Sickness at an all time Low
General Hospital is reporting that So far this year there have been few urgent requests to use the hyperbaric chamber for decompression accidents at sea. General Hospital Director, Dr. Arturo Villanueva Marrufo, assures that the hyperbaric chamber is open to the public for urgent decompression sickness, but the reality is that there have been very few cases.
He explained that the hyperbolic chamber in General Hospital has an increasing number of patients for treating diabetic foot and cerebral vascular accidents, as well as many other diseases, and only occasionally for fishermen experiencing decompression sickness. Although it is increasingly rare to use the chamber for decompression accidents, the team remains ready 24 hours a day in case of an emergency.
Cruise Ship Schedule Week of September 15th
Once again, there will be just ten cruise ships arriving in Cozumel this week. As usual, Puerta Maya terminal will continue to have the most operations due to its direct relationship with Carnival Cruise Lines.
The busiest days, will be Thursday and Friday with three arrivals coming in each day, while off-peak days will be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, i.e. the rest of the work week.
Between 25 and 30 thousand people will land on the island during this weekly period, barely enough to keep the economy of the island ‘half alive’, another week of poor economic activity.
