Cozumel News June 22, 2014 San José Casa Funeral Cozumel

San José Casa Funeral Cozumel is in Cozumel News June 22nd, 2014. This is  a featured story on the new Cozumel Funeral home that offers Crematorium services. At first rumors surfaced that there was a crematorium in Cozumel. I checked into it and reported that there was not, just a more economical service available. Still, there was a wide gap in prices charged to tourists and locals alike. Here is the reason. Some funeral homes contract with a crematorium in Cancun and some have contracts with a crematorium in  Playa Del Carmen. This article is on how much the funeral services can cost you. You will still need a cemetery if you plan to be buried here. To be fair, I will do follow-up interviews with the other funeral homes in town and re-publish an updated article on cemeteries.

san jose 1A Visit to San José Casa Funeral

Cozumel, June 19th, 2014. There have been many questions and confusion surrounding the new funeral home in Cozumel that offers cremation services. I stopped by yesterday afternoon to get some answers from Roman Canto, owner and 40 year resident of Cozumel. First, as I reported earlier, there is no crematorium on the island. What San José offers is to transport your loved one to Playa Del Carmen for cremation at their affiliated funeral home and return the ashes to you. Since this is their affiliate, and closest to us, they can offer a better price. San José Funeral Home is a professional fully operational modern facility with qualified staff trained in embalming sciences. They meet all the  certification,  licensing, and insurance requirements to work in Cozumel.

 The Current Costs:

The Cost for cremation is $1,500.00 U.S.D. The cost to prepare a loved one for a burial in a Metal Casket is $1,700.00 U.S.D. The cost to use the viewing room is $3,300.00 Pesos. The viewing room includes one pot of coffee and  a variety of  refreshments and water. Customers needing more refreshments are allowed to bring in their own. San José can arrange to have a loved one transported to a foreign country. The cost varies greatly depending on the country. Contact them directly for specific information.

Special Rates for Locals and Residents of Cozumel:

The cost for cremation as of today is $13,750.00 pesos. This includes the transportation and a basic wooden Urn (pictured). They will process the Mexican paperwork for you, and pass on to you the fees required by Civil Registry and Department of Health. This will cost you between $500 – $600 pesos.  If you want a viewing of your loved one, the traditional 24 hour period before cremation, the cost to use their viewing room facilities is $3,300.00 pesos. Again, the viewing room has complimentary coffee and an assortment of refreshments and water. Additional refreshments maybe brought in as needed.

san jose3There are also regular casket funerals available. The most economical is $14,900.00 pesos. (A breakdown of this package is  $11,550.00 pesos  for a simple casket, $3,300 pesos for the viewing room, and $50 pesos transmittal fees.) The same package with a Metal Casket costs $20,050.00 pesos, and with a top of the line wooden casket costs $24,550.00 pesos.

There is a payment plan available for cremation and regular casket funerals at no extra charge or interest. THIS CAN BE VERY IMPORTANT TO HAVE FOR THOSE OF US THAT PLAN ON LIVING AND DYING HERE. If you are like my husband and I with adult children in another country, having these arrangements already paid for and in your will is probably the way to go.

san jose2The payment plans are very economical, there is no interest or hidden costs. For example, on the cremation, they need a 10% deposit of $1,375 pesos. You then sign a contract to make monthly payments over 6, 12, 18, or 24 months. The balance after the deposit ($12,375.00 pesos) is divided into the number of monthly payments you choose. As an example, the six months plan would be 6 payments of $2,062.50.00 pesos. You will have a receipt and a legally binding contract as proof of payment.

The only documentation needed is the loved one’s Original Passport and copy and proof of address (utility bill) and copy. While you are required to buy the prepaid packages with a loved one in mind, paid services are transferable to another member of your family.
